Eulogy for Father This is the last of three formal memorials for my father. The first was in the surroundings of his last years, at his country church in Virginia, among his family and neighbors. The second was in the surroundings of his first years, among the boxwoods in Murfreesboro, in the presence of a large number of his buried ancestors and a smaller number of his living descendants. Today we gather to remember the middle years of his life, the years at Harvard which he considered his greatest, and which many now consider Harvard's greatest. You, his students and friends from those years, know he was a man of many talents. He was a scholar; a statesman who could see things clearly to which others were blind; a man of deep religious sensitivity; a man of the soil. He was a fighter, a boxer in his college days, a battery commander in World War I, a man who fought and bred gamecocks all his life, and, above all, a man in the thick of controversy at home and war abroad for more than fifty years of public life. Yet he was also a man who cherished honorable peace and loved to commend to his students the stern but pacific words of Lincoln's Second Inaugural: â€Å"With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on...to achieve a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.† He was a devoted family man, not just for us, his blood family, but also for the larger family of his students, co-workers, and friends. He expected great things of us, as we did of him. He was a genius with words, a writer, a poet, a powerful orator, a master storyteller, a man who in a single encounter could move people to their foundations. This moving power was deeper than words. He retained it to the end, after he had lost his command of words, and the vivid recollections of a long-ago speech or conversation so common among those who have met him are more apt to be of his power and presence than of the words he used. My own most recurrent memory of him is completely nonverbal. It is the look in his eyes years ago in Virginia when he had put me on a bus to the city.

In an article on the World Wide Web, â€Å"A Study of Smart phones† it talks about some of the history of Ericsson. Back in June of 1998, Ericsson made Symbian a privately independent company. Ericsson had one mission and that was, â€Å"To provide solutions to communication needs† (Ericsson, 2004). Ericsson made an ethical decision and commitment to the diversified customer base to always provide the end user with user friendly, expedient, business savvy computer compatible phones that severed and performed a wide variety of uses. That mission statement and ethical commitment grew, as did the Symbian coalition, which eventually included companies such as Matsushita, Motorola, Nokia, and Psion’s. With this new collaboration of world leading communication players came the new mission, which was, â€Å"To set the standard for mobile wireless operating systems and to enable a mass market for wireless information devices† (Grey Matter India, 2004). In 1998, Sony Ericsson had implemented the objective mission into the organization. In 2001, another mission was reborn. This mission statement focus was on the needs and wants of the consumer that included and embraced the ethics and the social responsibilities in present day. In 2001, the headlines stated â€Å"Welcome to Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications.† Then in October of 2001, Sony published on its website its new mission, which was â€Å"Our mission is to establish Sony Ericsson as the most attractive and innovative global brand in the mobile handset industry† (Ericsson, 2004). They went on to publish there social responsibility statement, which stated, â€Å"It is Sony Ericsson’s policy to behave in a socially and ethically exemplary way and to operate business in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. Sony Ericsson believes in respect for human rights and in the ethical treatment of all employees† (Ericsson, 2004). The Joint Venture Whether a company is small or large, there comes a time when a company needs to shift the way the company is managed. Large companies, such as Sony Ericsson, have been using self-directed work teams for years to improve quality, increase productivity, raise morale, lower costs, and boost  motivation. A self-directed work team is a group of workers from different functional areas of a company who work together as a unit largely without supervision, making decisions, and performing task that once belonged only to managers. However, it is important to note, that managers in companies using teams, such as Sony Ericsson, do not just sit around drinking coffee. In fact, they work just as hard as before, but the nature of their work changes dramatically. â€Å"Managers at Sony Ericsson take on roles of coaches who empower those around them to make decisions affecting their work and share information with workers. Comical Elements in Romeo Juliet - 1605 Words

The Most Excellent and Lamentable Tragedie, of Romeo and Iuliet Ââ€" a play with such a title as this could hardly be expected to contain any great deal of light-hearted comedy, but comic elements can still be seen throughout the course of the story. Characters joke and jest in between romantic soliloquies; bright imagery are embedded between passages of trouble, darkness, and death. These elements are so subtly included in the tragedy that one barely notices their poignancy as the story folds out. Upon reflection, however, readers can see that this most lamentable tragedy is not purely tragic. Why would Shakespeare, then, theoretically, dilute the pathos of Romeo Juliet by using these comical elements? He could have simply went along†¦show more content†¦While the Nurse is teasing Juliet, Romeos lovesick devotion is also being made fun of by his friend Mercutio, a brilliant, witty character whose name is derived from the quick-changing mercury. He is very much a comic cha racter in the sense that he adds a certain irreplaceable spark and liveliness to the play through both what he says and how he says it. According to Romeo, he is a gentlemanÂ….that loves to hear himself talk and will speak more in a minute than he will stand to in a month (99). Another talkative character, Mercutios language is full of life and imagery, and most importantly to his comical role, witty. His Queen Mab speech contains some of his of the most famous lines, which capture all of the imagination and eloquence he puts into his words. One of the best examples of the witticisms of his language among his friends, so loved by the Elizabethan audiences, are in his little battle of wits with Romeo: Mercutio: I will bite thee by the ear for that jest. Romeo: Nay, good goose, bite not. Mercutio: Thy wit is a very bitter sweeting; it is a most sharp sauce. Romeo: And is it not, then, well served into a sweet goose. (95) This carefree joking lights up the scene in a way that the servants and the Nurse are quite unable to do. When and How Many Times Should You Take the SAT

The most common advice for students applying to selective colleges is to take the SAT exam twice—once at the end of junior year and again at the beginning of senior year. With a good score junior year, theres no need to take the exam a second time. Many applicants take the exam three or more times, but the benefit of doing so is often minimal at best. As for when you should take the SAT, the answer will depend on a variety of factors: the schools to which youre applying, your application deadlines, your cash flow, your progress in math, and your personality. The SAT Junior Year With the College Boards  Score Choice  policy, it may be tempting to take the SAT early and often because you will be allowed to choose which scores you send to colleges. Thats not always the best approach. For one, many colleges ask you to send all of your score reports even with Score Choice, and it can reflect poorly upon you if it looks like youve taken the test a half dozen times in the hopes of lucking into a better score. Also, it gets costly to take the exam over and over, and it isnt unusual to find that total SAT costs become many hundreds of dollars. The College Board offers the SAT seven times in a year: August,  October, November, December, March, May and June. If youre a junior you have several options. One is simply to wait until senior year—theres no requirement to take the exam junior year, and taking the exam more than once doesnt always have a measurable benefit. If youre applying to selective schools such as  the countrys  top universities  or  top colleges, it probably is a good idea to take the exam in the spring of junior year. May and June are both popular times for juniors, although March has the benefit of coming before AP exams and final exams. Taking the exam in junior year allows you to get your scores, compare them to the score ranges in the  college profiles of your top choice schools, and then see if taking the exam again in senior year makes sense. By testing junior year, you have the opportunity, if needed, to use the summer to take practice exams, work through an SAT preparation book or take  an SAT prep course. Many juniors take the SAT earlier than the spring. This decision is typically driven by growing anxiety about college and a desire to see where you stand in the college admissions landscape. Theres really no harm in doing this, and colleges are more and more seeing applicants who took the exam three times—once at the end of sophomore or beginning of junior year, once at the end of junior year, and once at the beginning of senior year. However, taking the exam early can be a waste of time and money and cause unnecessary stress. The redesigned SAT exam tests what youve learned in school, and the reality is that youll be much more prepared for the exam at the end of junior year than the beginning. This can be particularly true if you arent in an accelerated math program. Also, the PSAT is already serving the function of predicting your performance on the SAT. Taking both the SAT and the PSAT early in junior year is a bit redundant, and do you really want to spend that many hours doing standardized testing? Test burn-out is a real possibility. The SAT Senior Year First of all, if you took the exam in junior year and your scores are strong for your top choice colleges, theres no need to take the exam again. If, on the other hand, your scores are average or worse in relation to matriculated students at your favorite schools, you should definitely take the SAT again. If youre a senior applying early action or early decision, youll most likely need to take the August or October exams. Scores from exams later in the fall probably will not reach colleges in time. If youre applying regular admission, you still dont want to put off the exam for too long—pushing the exam too close to the application deadline leaves you no room to try again should you fall ill on exam day or have some other problem. The College Boards relatively new August exam option is a good one. For most states, the exam falls before the term has begun, so you wont have the stress and distractions of senior-year coursework. Youre also likely to have fewer conflicts with weekend sporting events and other activities. Up until 2017, however, the October exam was the top choice for seniors, and this test date remains a good option for all college-bound students. A Final Word About SAT Strategies It may tempting to take the SAT more than twice, but realize that doing so can reflect negatively upon you if your standardized testing becomes excessive. When an applicant takes the SAT a half dozen times, it can begin to look a bit desperate, and it can also look like the student is spending more time taking the test than actually preparing for it. Also, with all the pressure and hype surrounding admission to highly selective colleges, some students are taking a trial run at the SAT sophomore or even freshman year. Youd do better putting your effort into earning good grades in school. If youre eager to know early how you might perform on the SAT, grab a copy of the College Boards SAT Study Guide and take a practice exam under test-like conditions. Its less expensive than the actual SAT, and your record wont include low SAT scores from taking the exam prematurely.
